Come on let’s admit it, the reality is steroids are fucked up.
Yes, they work, REALLY well, and in a really short time.
Do I know because I have personal experience.
But I’ve been inside gyms for over 27 years now, so i have trained with many who have.
Steroids are a divisive subject
On the one hand you have professional bodybuilders who ‘have’ to take it to compete with the top guys.
A decision that will pay off for the few, and one that in all reality is short term.
And yet, for the top professional guys I have utmost respect.
Because even with all the steroids in the world it’s their work ethic that amazes me, it’s just a shame their work ethic has to be compounded with copious amounts of steroids.
Bodybuilding is an art form.
If you are reading this you may well be someone who loves training?
You may well also be someone who is reading the rest of this so you can leave a comment / opinion at the end of this post, and that I respect also.
However, back to my point.
Listen to any bodybuilder and they will tell you, they pursue the sport because they love to see what the human body can be moulded into, it’s incredible when you really think about it, you are literally tearing your body down and it’s like,
‘fuck you, next time you try that I’ll be prepared, I will be bigger, stronger, faster!’
I mean come on!
And as someone who has trained natural his entire life
I can honestly say, pushing my body to the limits without any artificial help is empowering! Which sometimes comes off as smug, but it’s definitely empowering.
And that’s why steroids are bullshit.
Professional bodybuilders make a choice, not based on the feeling of achieving their goal naturally, just, achieving their goals in ‘any way necessary’.
The biggest legend Rich Piana
Someone who I admired for years was a guy called Rich Piana, for 2 reasons, how open he was about steroids, and the choice he made early on to lead a life of ‘I’m going to take whatever I need to get the freakiest body out there’ he became his brand 5% ‘whatever it takes’
But what I admired about Rich Piana was he would talk about the negative impacts, shown perfectly in this video
Sadly Rich Piana passed away in August 2017. suprising, no, but extremely sad nonetheless.
I want it NOW!!
Rich Piana said it in the video above, nowadays everybody wants it NOW.
Movies on tap, delivery next day, food to go…….
Social media pushes the need to be perfect to the limit.
Why should I wait to have a body like him or her, fuck it, I’ll take some steroids and look hench in months!!
Yes, you will.
Will you have earnt it.
Will it be long term.
When I started working out, Steroids were a dark subject, if you went to the gym looking for steroids, you’d have to train hard for a few months before you could even whisper the phrase
‘I’m looking to take steroids……..’
This was followed by a few weeks of silence, background checks and 2 weeks of constantly surveillance, okay, so those last two are bullshit.
But my point is, they weren’t accessible.
And that was a good thing.
Hell you had to TRAIN first.
You had to GROW, naturally.
Fuck you had to consume foul tasting protein shakes as a rights of passage.
Nowadays, steroids are spoken about out loud in the gym, newbies are buying bottles of roids in their first few weeks of training and then they get to drink delicious tasting supplements to ease their aching muscle!!
Love the fucking journey and stop looking for the quick route.
If you haven’t seen or heard of Elliot Hulse before, he is perhaps more eloquent than I at explaining the point above i.e. he uses less swear words 🙂
Yeah but I can’t get big naturally? So I have to take steroids.
Okay how big do you want to get?
Let’s name a few guys who are natural and see if that ‘size’ is big enough:
A natural bodybuilder, someone who uses nutrition and proper form to build a decent body, has he been accused of taking steroids, yes, which is a compliment to a natural bodybuilder.
But it’s possible to look good naturally
Pffft he’s not big enough, I want more muscle.
Okay so Mike is relatively young compared to our next guy.
How about 50? And ripped, Strong, like proper strong and still going.
There have been MANY debates about Mike O’Hearn and his natural status, however I believe he is natural.
Because he has lived and breathed bodybuilding since he was a teenager, because he has dedicated his life to that of a bodybuilder (in the truest form) and because Rich Piana said so, and if anyone would be able to spot someone who uses steroids, he would!!!
Ultimately Mike O’Hearn is the pinnacle of what you can achieve in the LONG run, his approach has been methodical and patient, and clearly he is super passionate about the sport, the body you see today is a reflection of that passion.
Check out this great video of two training together
Yeah, yeah I hear you say, but he’s only 50, eventually he is going to need to take shit.
Okay well then, I see your Mike O’Hearn and I raise you C T Fletcher!
Strong AS FUCK.
Warning, this next section may contain offensive language.
For those of you who are not aware of C T Fletcher, this mother fucker, is an ‘Iron Addict’ and one strong son of a bitch.
For those of you who do know who he is, you will know, most recently he has had a heart transplant, but this is not about the nine lives of CT, this is about how a 60 year old can have bigger natural guns than you!!!!!
C T Fletcher lives by the saying:
‘It’s Still Yo Mother Fucking Set’
A hard core power lifter and 3-time World Bench Press Champion C.T actually took steroids for a small period of time, but for the remainder of his training life has stayed natural.
Watch this clip from Joe Rogan Podcast and see what CT thought of steroids.
Okay so you can be strong look good, but what’s your point.
Ultimately it is your decision.
Steroids are an option.
But before you go and take the leap, perhaps see what your body can do.
Read, study, ask and learn the correct technique to maximise your training.
Take time to nourish your body with the right nutrition and learn about Macros and Micro nutrition.
Build yourself up little by little, the short term gains of steroids, no matter how tempting, are still short term.
If you aren’t looking to win Mr Olympia 2021 perhaps hold off on the steroids and test your body first, you’ll thank me when you hit 40, 50 even 60’s.
Its become a double edged sword, previously steroids weren’t mentioned and were made out to be dangerous, we know now that’s not true, but as it has become more accepted in the public arena, so has the need for the question:
Do you NEED to take steroids??
Instead its been replaced with:
Steroids are fine, how many do you want.
We need to go back to asking the question what is right for me, my health and my LONG term goals? Is bodybuilding a career choice? or is it recreational?
Like all things don’t rush into looking for the quick route.
Take your time, and enjoy the journey.
Your body is amazing and in the end it will thank you for it!
Comment below if you have been on steroids and are now off, or were natural and now take steroids.
